Bible verses about helping the poor.

Poverty runs rampant in our world today. As Christians, what can we do to care for our impoverished brothers and sisters? We should start by looking at Bible verses about the poor and homeless. Here are some Bible verses about helping the poor:

1. Proverbs 29:7

“The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.”

2. Exodus 23:10-11

“For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused. Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what is left.”

3. Leviticus 19:9-10

“‘When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God.’”

4. 1 Samuel 2:8

“He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. ‘For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; on them he has set the world.’”

5. Job 5:15-17

“He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth; he saves them from the clutches of the powerful. So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.”

6. Proverbs 21:13

“Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered.”

7. Proverbs 22:9

“The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.”

8. Luke 11:41

“But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.”

9. Matthew 25:40

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

It can be so easy to forget about the poor in our communities and the world at large. But, as Christians, we are invited to live with a deep consciousness of our brothers/sisters. Whether it is through our giving, our prayers, or our time, we are to care for the poor.

  1. Laws against the homeless are being made by those whose politics I generally agree with. I want these laws amended and repealed. Ps 10:2 and many other scriptures talk about the poor. Laws against the poor are laws against God.
