Bible verses about a refugee that teach us how to act.
At some point, we will encounter a refugee. Whether that is direct contact or indirect through how we handle refugee crises, we need to know how to treat them. Our best model for this is Jesus. So, how would He treat a refugee? Let’s look at some Bible verses about refugees to guide our understanding.
1. Psalm 146:9
“The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.”
2. Zechariah 7:10
“‘Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.’”
3. Hebrews 13:1-2
“Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers for by doing that some have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”
4. Deuteronomy 10:18
“He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.”
5. Matthew 25:35-36
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”
From these few verses, we know that our Lord calls us to show hospitality and generosity to those around us, including the refugee. Jesus would welcome them in. He would clothe them and feed them. He would sit with them in their pain and give them a sense of great belonging in His family. For that very reason, we should do the same.
