Widows in the Bible.
Suffering the loss of a spouse is a grief far too many people experience. After having built a life together and encouraging each other towards Christ, continuing without your spouse is devastating. So how do we respond when so many have suffered this loss? What are some comforting words for a grieving widow in the Bible? What does Christ say about widows in the Bible?
Here are a few verses to consider:
Deuteronomy 10:18
“He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.”
Isaiah 1:17
“Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.”
James 1:27
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
Losing a spouse can raise a lot of questions about the goodness of God and His plan for our lives. While there aren’t always answers for everything, we can be confident that God is indeed looking out for the widow and the widower. He is protecting them, comforting them, and providing for them. Those are the most comforting words for a grieving widow.
We know that Christ is ever-present with us in our suffering. The widow can rest assured that her Christian community is compelled to care for her, just as our Lord in Heaven does.
Venture serves the widowed community in a number of ways. You can read more about and participate in our work at our website. To start, here are a few pages to begin with: food security and women’s empowerment
